Officiating a Wedding from Rick Egbert on Vimeo.
EXPLORE
Watch this video and follow the instructions below.
1. Think through the following questions:
- What is the purpose of a wedding (besides the obvious)?
- What have been some special elements that you’ve seen in weddings?
- What do you want the couple to experience during their wedding ceremony?
2. Read the following:
- Christian Ministers Manual (published by Standard Publishing), read the section on weddings
- http://christianity.about.com/od/christianweddingelements/a/weddingoutline.htm - this article shows good examples and has good links to more ceremony resources.
EXPERIENCE
1. Attend a wedding performed by a pastor you respect and trust
2. After the ceremony, interview them to learn how they put the ceremony together and how they worked with the couple.
3. For a bonus point, attend the rehearsal, too.
4. Write an outline of the ceremony along with suggested readings and a short devotion/homily giving a biblical perspective on marriage.
5. Perform a wedding! Have fun!
EVALUATE
1. Think about the purpose of a Christian wedding. Did you accomplish that purpose?
2. With your mentor, discuss what you would like to do differently in the future.
